With the MASH units close to the battlefield and early treatment of wounded plus quick evacuation of the seriously wounded by helicopter, helped to lower the fatality rate for the Army's wounded. By the end of 1950, there were four MASH units in support of seven divisions and attached U.N. The MASH unit became a 200 bed evacuation hospital, but sometimes there were over 400 patients a day. In November 1950 each MASH unit was enlarged to 150 beds and then to 200 beds by May 1951. There were three MASH units in Korea after the war had began, it was staffed by personnel taken from other Medical Department units. At first the MASH units would be surgery only but that would later change. The units were first established in August 1945, and were deployed during the Korean War and later conflicts. MASH units or the Mobile Army Surgical Hospital was a United States Army medical unit serving as a fully functional hospital in combat areas.
